  • Michelle has the most consecutive national titles with 8, breakin Owen's record of 6.
  • Michelle is the only woman other than Maribel Vinson Owen, in the history of U.S. ladies figure skating to win 9 U.S. gold medals (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005).
  • Michelle has the most consecutive U.S. Championship medals. She has been on the National podium every year since 1994!
  • Michelle is the youngest ever to compete at U.S. National Championships, at age 13, and she finished 6th!


  • Michelle is the only woman in history to regain a World title more than once (she did it 3 times)

  • Michelle's older sister Karen Kwan was 7th in 1995 Nationals, 5th in 1996, and 7th in 1997. Karen also represented the United States at numerous international skating events, and won the bronze medal at the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany.    
  • Michelle is the aunt to Karen Kwan and Peter Oppegard's children, Olivia Colett Oppegard, and Sophia Oppegard.
